rx3715 random crashes

Monday, February 28th, 2005

Well, the random crashes just keep on happening and then this afternoon I picked up the rx3715 from my desk and walked into another room. I turned it on to check something and low and behold the ultimate mother of a crash! The whole system shutdown and rebooted.

Now, I should have known something was wrong when the starting screen looked different as it didn’t have the vertical blue bar on the left. Hmmm. Then… ‘DING’ “Welcome to your HP…”. AAARRRGGGHHH! The damn thing had hard-reset losing *everything*! FFS!

So, back to my desk, restore from backup…everything was good again.

BUT, got home, turn on, ‘DING’ “Welcome to your HP…”. AGAIN!  and I’d left my USB connector at work so I can’t restore at home.

Crap!

rx3715 freeze/crash/lock #2

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

My rx3715 is still randomly refusing to startup as per my recent post . This seems to have extended to not responding at all when the PIN screen appears at a bootup.

The device does respond to a screen press by putting on the backlight but it doesn’t actually accept any input. This results in my removing the battery, waiting, power on, try again, soft reset, remove battery, try again, etc. etc. :(

rx3715 - todays install

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

Installed on my ipaq rx3715 so far:

Killer Apps

  • Pocket Informant 5 - top stuff, works like a charm. Makes managing hectic schedules and the massive to-do lists generated by GTD simple.
  • PocketBreeze - puts all my important stuff from PI on the Today screen
  • MemMaid - a memory cleaning util for PPC. Flushes out all the crap like temp files. Great review here.
  • Calligrapher - necessary for PhatPad
  • PhatPad - promising as it offers support for writing notes up in a meeting and then converting them to text with Calligrapher afterwards. I’ve only just started with this and I’m hoping this is going to mean I can ditch paper notes on my up-coming trip to GDCONF.

Handy

  • WiFiFoFum - a good wifi network discovery program. Good for war-walking/driving. Neither Airsniffer/MiniStumbler work on the RX3715.
  • Pocket Streets - so I can have local maps to hand for the places I visit.
  • Bejeweled 2 - ’nuff said
  • WebIS Mail - a ‘better’ mail program

Visuals

  • Wisbar Advance 2 - makes the Today screen look nice.
  • SWDeluxe skin - makes everything look the same and good

rx3715 freeze/lock/crash

Sunday, February 20th, 2005

More of a note to self about the continuation of the problem where my rx3715 will just fail to come back on after it goes into standby either by pressing the ‘off’ button at the top or it timing out.

The unit fails to restart despite me pressing any of the keys or pressing the soft reset button. It only responds when I physically remove the battery, wait a while, replace it and then turn on. Obviously less than ideal.

Much googling hasn’t turned anything up, and I’m on the latest bios install with minimal software running.

iPaq

Ace! Just got ordered myself a iPAQ rx3715 Pocket PC.

iPaq RX3715It should be here in a few days but then again it is being imported from the US. It seems to be feature packed but the most important features for me are that it’s fast and has wifi! I chose this after much deliberation between various PDA devices including Palm and Pocket PC types. I know that Pocket PC devices need to be bigger & faster just to compete with a smaller Palm simply because of the ‘weight’ of running Windows Mobile edition. I was initially interested in the Sony UX50 but it’s a bit old now and difficult to get hold of so I moved my Palm choice on to the Palm Tungsten T3 as PC World were selling them really cheap at £170. PC World were sold out all over the place so I plumped for the rx3715 as I got a great deal that made it cheaper than the T3!
