North West Global Education Network

Aims & Objectives

Regional Profile

The North West of England is a highly diverse area in terms of its community and environment, consisting of the five sub-regions of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside and covering 14,000 sq km. The region is home to 6.9 million people of whom over 25% are under the age of nineteen. Whilst 80% of the population lives in the urban area lying between Liverpool and Manchester the majority of the region is rural, resulting in significant issues relating to provision and access to services in these areas.

The region has some of the wealthiest and poorest areas with 15 of the 55 most deprived Local Authorities in the country and Liverpool and Manchester ranked first and third. The average life expectancy for men and women is below average and the death rate is the highest of all the health regions in England.

There are significant Asian, Muslim, Chinese and African Caribbean communities within the urban areas but also large pockets of the region that are 'white-only'. Within these areas awareness of other cultures is low amongst the population in general, and school children in particular.

The scale of the engagement process is immense with 3,755 schools, employing over 65,000 full time equivalent teachers and engaging with nearly 1,190,000 pupils. Across the region there are also 22 Local Education Authorities and 16 providers of Higher Education, including 7 providing Initial Teacher Education and Training.

This NorthWest strategy is part of a wider context.
