Community building activities have different uses at different stages in the development of any different community or group.
When a group first comes together, and whenever a new member joins, the most appropriate activities are those enabling group members to get to know each other, helping them feel safe enough to speak their own opinions without worrying about the reactions of other group members.

Games requiring more skills, e.g. trust, are better used when the students have begun to mature as a group. These games can be used to develop specific social skills such as listening, working together, accepting and acting on group decisions, turn taking and cooperation.
