Needs identified in the regional consultation
The mains needs identified through the consultation phase
are summarised below:
- Improve and simplify channels of communication between schools and
service providers supporting the global dimension in education.
- Increase the status of the global dimension in the curriculum.
- Recognise the role of citizenship in the curriculum as a major (although
not the only) vehicle for delivering the global dimension.
- Provide more effective support to teachers working in isolation.
- Increase the access schools have to Southern people and to people
and situations that can bring new perspectives and life experiences
to children in schools.
- Provide better training for teachers in the process and content of
the global dimension, both during initial teacher education (ITE) and
as continuing professional development (CPD).
- Provide opportunities for teachers to control their own professional
development through participation in curriculum projects and other teacher-lead
initiatives.
- Facilitate whole-school change strategies.
- Provide opportunities for more pupils to become involved in influencing
the curriculum they are offered.
- Provide teachers with high quality, up-to-date teaching resources
and advice on resources.
- Ensure that all schools in all parts of the region have access to
the resource support.
These needs resulted in a strategy being drawn up with 5
strategic objectives and proposed activities resulting from these.
