OUR HISTORY

We started training in traditional Yoseikan Karate under instructor Chris Whitehouse in 1981. My name is Simon and my brother's name is Darren, I was 6 years old and he was 11.

Karate training was strict, very disciplined and we didn't wear pads! There was no room for error. We originally trained at Greenhill Church, we then moved to Lowedges where we trained three times a week for some 20 years, we have also trained above the Big Tree pub in Woodseats.

During this time we entered many competitions, travelled all over England and attended many weekends away, where we learned different skills including weapons training.

Eventually after years of training we took over the club from our instructor, we continued to train at Lowedges. Seven years ago we opened a new session at Graves Tennis and Leisure Centre, it was clear straight away this session was different. We started to open training up, using different techniques from other styles and disciplines. We started including punches from every angle and different kicks, this made for a very good fighting style, it's a mixture consisting of karate and kickboxing. We felt this was the direction we needed to go.

In March 2004 we created Marsden's All Styles and our first adult class took place on Monday 1st March at Hillsborough Sports Arena. Shortly after we started a junior class, the first class was held on Tuesday 24th March 2004.

After over 25 years training at Lowedges we made the difficult decision to cease training there and in April 2006 we held our first Wednesday session at Hillsborough. The transition was complete when we also moved Saturdays session from Graves to Hillsborough, we felt that it was time Marsden's All Styles had a permanent base.

In the autumn of last year MAS was awarded a council grant of five hundred pounds, this enabled us to buy more equipment for the club which has helped us in many ways. We believe we train to a high standard and have the years of experience at all levels to back this up.

We train hard and that's the key, as instructors we train with you, we have a deep passion for the Martial Arts and respect all disciplines. Many people have walked through our door, but it is only the dedicated who stay.

We enter regular competitions at local and National level. We have also had several of our fighters represent MAS at fight nights. The core of our training is self defence, a realistic approach to defending yourself. We are confident in what we teach, we are no fly by night club, we are here to stay. Finally I have to say thank you to our dad John Marsden , who has always been there from day one, from when we first started training as kids to the present, dad is always there he is part of the backbone of MAS, at the age of 60 still never misses a training session. It's great to see dad now supporting his grandchildren just like he did Darren and I all those years ago.

As you might have guessed we are straight talking and this statement is not glamorized in any way, we don't promise Bruce Lee in 4 weeks. We welcome anyone to our sessions and would never turn other instructors away from watching or training at one of our sessions, there is nothing to hide, the door is always open. I will finish by saying Darren, Dad and I are dedicated, loyal and have the same level of enthusiasm we had 26 years ago. So if you want to be part of an incredible team come and join us.
