Con booklet
Just about got this finished before the con started. We
will be printing some of these off and making them available
on the registration desk, but to make absolutely sure you have
this indispensable
guide to the restaurants and pubs of Derby, download it
and print it yourself.
Directions
My apologies for the tardiness in getting the directions to
the con loaded on to the web site. I've been heavily involved
in arranging the funeral of Kevin Warne (see below) and just
not had the time to get the documents uploaded, though they
have been ready to go for a week or so now.
Anyhow, directions on how to get to the con, whether by
car, train, coach, aeroplane or winged chariot are now
available in two flavours: Word
document or PDF
file.
Kevin Warne
Bloody hell. They are dropping like flies. Kevin Warne,
co-editor of Zine Poll winning zine Take That You Fiend! died
in October of heart disease. He was just 54 years old.
Tony Wheatley
Oh dear. Another one (see Peter Hawkins entry, below). We
are sorry to report that postal gaming hobby stalwart and
regular con attendee Tony Wheatley has died.
This year's dates
The con moves to the Hallmark Hotel in Derby.
Dates are: 11 - 13 November, 2011.
Peter Hawkins
We were very sorry to hear of the death of MidCon
regular Peter Hawkins. He was aged just 54.
Dip dip dip-di-dip
We are pleased to announce that MidCon XXXIII
will be co-habiting with EuroDipCon XIX in 2011. If you have
no interest in Diplomacy you can safely ignore this
announcement and, in all probability, the Dip players as well,
as they will be in a separate room. If you are interested
in more information, check out the EuroDipCon
flyer.
Having said that, I am sure the Diplomacy players will come
and join the rest of the con when the Dip is over or they have
been eliminated from the tournament.
For those of you interested in playing in the Diplomacy,
there is the scope for some confusion about who to book with
and what have you. The best way to think of it is to regard
EuroDipCon as a MidCon tournament. So, book for
the con and arrange your hotel room (if you intend to stay in
the hotel) through the MidCon committee but
lodge your entry for the EuroDipCon tourament through the EuroDipCon
committee.
EuroDipCon
XIX will comprise three qualifying rounds (Friday
afternoon, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon) with a final
round on Sunday morning which will feature the top board. The
winner of the top board will be European Champion.
Additionally, the Saturday afternoon Round will be the team
round for teams of 4. Prize giving will follow the final round
on Sunday afternoon and should be completed before 5pm.
MidCon
traditionally hosts the UKs National Diplomacy Championship and will also be the
final event of the Tour of Britain 2011. There will be many
awards to play for!
Running
on a central clock, games will be played in the European
Style, finishing after winter 1907. Games will be scored using
the c-diplo73 system.
Local Derby
As many of you will know, the con will be moving to
Derby, and the Hallmark
Hotel. We are quite pleased with the choice but the proof
of the pudding and all that. For now, we can promise that it
will offer two major advantages in terms of convenience for
travellers: car drivers will be pleased to know the car park
is free, while rail travellers will welcome the fact that the
hotel is about 70 yards from Derby BR station.
Peter Berlin, Richard Beattie
& John Harrington leave a French restaurant in Birmingham,
the name of which escapes me ...
Bring & Buy
We'll be doing the Bring & Buy again.
Games that will be on offer
If you want to give punters advance notice of the games you
will be bringing along to sell, contact John via http://fbgames.co.uk
or, if you can't be bothered to visit that web site you can
probably work out his address by rearranging the following
elements into the right order:
- @
- john
- fbgames.co.uk
Clue: Put them in the following order: 213, with no spaces
in between!
I know this photo looks like
it has a big crease going north to south just right of the
centre of the picture, but that is, in fact, a piece of
string, atop of which is a helium filled balloon. The balloon
is always (well, almost always) with a committee member to
make it easy to find them.
